Palau Shipping Company Inc., is in the 32nd year of providing shipping service to the Republic of Palau and to the State of Yap. It has been a long and arduous journey. Palau Shipping has seen many partners? come and go. The vision in 1974, of the founding fathers of this company, to start their own shipping service, to provide consistent and reliable service, has left us with the company we know today. In 1974 twenty-six people from the District of Palau took over all rights and title to Palau Shipping Company Incorporated from its original incorporators. Mr. David Ramarui, Mr. Francisco Morei, Mr. Eusevio Termeteet, Mr. Joseph Tellei, Mr. James Andres and Mr. Indalecio Rudimch first incorporated Palau Shipping Co., Inc. on November 2, 1965. The company lay dormant until 1974 when a group led by Mr. Ngiratkel Etpison, Mr. Roman Tmetuchel, Mr. Ngirutang Oit, Mr. Isidoro Rudimch, and Mr. Jacob Sawaichi purchased the right to the ?Palau Shipping? name and took over the operation of Palau Shipping Company Inc. Many other local businessmen were involved in the early stages of the company?s development. Some of those that are still with us today are Mr. Minami Ueki, Mr. Johnny Reklai (present President of the company), Mr. Masami Elbelau, Mr. Luke Bekebemad, Mr. Yoichi Singeo and Mr. George Ngirarsaol. The newly organized company, under the able hand of the then General Manager, Mr. Lucky Lakobong, struggled for several years. The M.V. Micronesian Princess was chartered from the United States Trust Territory Government and was used to service Palau and Yap from Guam. The service to Yap State was started through the joint efforts of the Chamber of Commerce of both Yap and Palau. Several Yapese businessmen, notably Mr. Sylvester Alfonso, Mr. Ruumung and Mr. Ambros Mangafel invested in Palau Shipping. Palau Shipping has been providing shipping service to Yap ever since. For the next several years Palau Shipping partnered itself with several different Japanese shipping companies, TSK and Aall & Company Ltd., until joining forces with Kambara Kisen Co., Ltd., in September of 1983. The company continued growing under the management of Mr. Sam Masang, Mr. Mitsungi Solang and Mr. Marciano Imeong. In 1994 Palau Shipping signed an agreement with American President Line to provide regular service from the USWC transshipped in Guam. This began a period of changing schedules and increasing volumes. Up until this time the vessel calls where normally every 30 days. The new service from the USWC via Guam improved the scheduled service to biweekly and greatly improved the transit time. In the late 90?s Matson Navigation of Hawaii had bought out APL and took over the service from the USWC to Guam. The service is now weekly vessel calls
